Police trying to track down better images of gas clerk’s killers

Cumberland County investigators are asking businesses all along the Carlisle Pike to look through their surveillance footage from Sunday night in an effort to obtain clearer images of two people suspected in the shooting death of a gas station clerk.

Linda Ness, 55, of Carlisle was found behind the counter of the Hess Express on the 7000-block of the Carlisle Pike at around 10:30 p.m. Sunday. The customer thought she had suffered a heart attack, but police later learned Ness had likely been shot. An autopsy to determine an official cause of death is scheduled for Tuesday at 10 a.m.

District Attorney Dave Freed said because no money was taken, it would appear this was an “execution” of sorts, but added since Ness had no known enemies, it is likely a botched robbery. Authorities have not released where on her body she was shot, or how many times.

In the surveillance pictures from the store, Freed said Ness appears to be complying with the robbers' orders, but after a few minutes she is shot anyway.

He said he is confident these suspects will be identified and arrested.

“To the actor who committed this brazen brutal crime, I would say this: we are patient and we will find them and we will bring them to justice,” Freed said in a Monday press conference.

Police are also looking for a third person who was caught on surveillance speaking with Ness just minutes before the two suspects entered the store.

Anyone with information on this case should call Silver Spring Township police at 697-0607.

Ness leaves behind three sons, Freed said. Dozens of loyal customers wrote on abc27's Facebook page Monday, expressing what a kind person she was.

“I live 5 minutes from Hess and I knew Linda and talked to her often. I'm disgusted and appalled by this situation,” viewer Jessica Hahn said.

“Prayers going out to Linda's family,” viewer Sissy Fisher said. “I get gas there all the time. LINDA was a wonderful lady.”
