Beauty on a Budget: Protect your skin

We women work hard to keep our skin glowing and healthy.

“My regiment: moisturizer and I actually spray my children's sunscreen in the moisturizer and apply that to my face,” said Vanessa Washington of Susquehanna Township.

The sunscreen is an especially good thing since the sun gets an A for helping produce vitamin D — but an F when it comes skin cancer and aging.

However, the sun is not the only cause of skin damage. Dr. Christine Mackley, chief dermatologist at Brownstone Dermatology, said recent studies show compact fluorescent  bulbs contribute to aging and skin cancers too, 

Protecting our skin from the sun and preventing skin cancer and dark spots are a must. But at what price?

“I have to admit that I'm cheap. I don't want to buy stuff that may not work so I buy all my stuff at the drug store or the grocery store” said thrifty shopper Patty Kim.

But do those products work without putting a wrinkle in your budget? Mackley says yes.

Several products between $6 and $30 dollars caught her eye, including a store brand sunscreen.

“I really like this product,” Mackley said picking up a box of CareOne Complete Beauty Lotion. “I've never seen [it] before. This is a generic that you found at Giant and if you look at the back it contains Zinc. So its actually a daily moisturizer, that contains Zinc. So it's great. From my standpoint this is ideal” said Mackley.

She said the best way to keep brown spots and skin cancer at bay is to slather on sunscreen everyday that contains zinc or titanium and at least an SPF 15 with UVA and UVB protection.

Gloria Vasquez- Merrick knocks out the sunscreen requirement by combining it with another one of her daily regiments.

“I  swear by foundation with SPF 15. I think it's very important that you have some type of sun protection, and that's one of the things I look for,” she said.

For wrinkles, Mackley recommend rentinol and Vitamin C. Specifically, the RoC Deep Wrinkle serum.

“That's just a good example of an over the counter product that contains retinol” said Mackley.

 When it comes to all over skin care, moisturize as soon as you get out of the shower. Oils can be used anytime. Use lotions in the spring and summer and creams in the fall and winter.

“For winter and for just a general body cream, I like moisturizer CeraVe.  I like Cetaphil.  CeraVe also makes a really nice product called Cera Ve PM,” Mackley said.

And a healthy inside also help keep you beautiful on the outside. So don't forget a good diet, says Sarah Glunz, Giant Foods in-store nutritionist.

“One of the things we always recommend for healthy skin are omega-3 fats — those good fats.”

Omega 3's are found in salmon, sardines, nuts and seeds like flax or chia. And don't skip the fruits and vegetables.

“Fruits and vegetables we know are very anti-inflammatory so a lot of skin problems are due to inflammation, but also fruits and vegetables contain a lot vitamins, minerals, and anti-oxidants which help to keep our skin healthy, keep us from aging” said Glunz.
