Just in time for Veteran's Day, the Army Heritage and Education Center in Carlisle is opening an interactive exhibit that they hope will help visitors understand the Army through the eyes of the soldier on the ground.

“We hope as people walk through the museum they'll be able to find something they're interested in,” said the center's director Col. Matt Dawson, “and it will drive them to do a little more research in our collections.”

Upon arrival to the new exhibit, visitors will receive a dog tag that they can scan at various stations throughout the $2.5 million exhibit. A parachute landing simulation, exhibits that talk to you, marksmanship practice, instructions from a digital drill sergeant on how to salute, stand at attention and turn, and a special veterans corner — these are all things visitors will experience at the exhibit.

Dawson said he hopes the various interactive features will help any type of learner retain the information that's presented.

The exhibit carries visitors chronologically through the story of a civilian who becomes a soldier. The journey begins as they are thinking of joining the Army and follows them through boot camp and then through the Spanish-American War and into present day. It's an exhibit meant to “educate and inspire soldiers and the nation about the history of the Army,” Dawson said.

The exhibit will open Friday from 4-6 p.m. The center will also be open
for the rest of the weekend, including on Veteran's Day on Sunday.
Museum hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and
Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free.
