Exelon Generation and local emergency management agencies will conduct a second test Thursday of the new emergency notification sirens around Three Mile Island.
The full three-minute test is scheduled to begin at 12:30 p.m.
Exelon recently completed the installation of 96 new sirens in the 10-mile radius around the nuclear power plant and must now test the system to meet the requirements of the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
The new sirens have improved sound coverage and a battery back-up to ensure they will able operate during a power outage.
Two additional tests have been scheduled as follows:
- Thursday, Nov. 1 – six separate tests beginning at 8 a.m. (three minutes each) In the event of inclement weather these tests will occur on Friday, Nov. 2.
- Thursday, Nov. 15 at 12:30 P.M. – full three minute test
The purpose of the sirens is to notify residents to tune into an Emergency Alert System radio or television station in case of an emergency at TMI, or tornadoes, floods, or other events requiring notification to residents.
