Woman who hid children released from prison

YORK, Pa. (AP) – A woman who admitted to hiding her five children from the world has been released from prison in central Pennsylvania.

York County Prison officials tell the York Daily Record that 34-year-old Louann Bowers was released Thursday. She was sentenced last week to 11 1/2 to 23 months in prison followed by 23 months of probation. She'd been incarcerated since her arrest, so the judge said she could be released once a parole plan was approved.

Bowers gave birth to a sixth child while in jail. Last week, she said in court that she kept her children from public life because she was “selfish.”

In September, Bowers and her husband, 46-year-old Sinhue Johnson, were charged with five counts of endangering the welfare of a child. Bowers pleaded no contest in May; Johnson's case is pending.
