A New Cumberland man serving in Iraq has been awarded the purple heart.
Defense Secretary Robert Gates presented the medal to Specialist Shawn Mason yesterday.
On August 9th, Mason was driving an armored truck near Fallujah when a man threw a grenade at the vehicle. Shrapnel went through Mason's jaw, but he kept driving to get his fellow soldiers out of harm's way.
Mason has ten more months to serve in Iraq. He said he will serve them proudly.
